Anevia Announces New Video Server Supporting WebM Live Streaming

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Anevia, a provider of video solutions and service infrastructure for the delivery of live and on-demand services, launched a new version of its ViaMotion video server that is capable of supporting WebM Live Streaming with adaptive bitrate.

Recently Google (News - Alert) launched the open source, royalty-free video format called WebM which defines the file container structure, video and audio formats; the files consist of video streams compressed with the VP8 video codec and audio streams compressed with the Vorbis audio codec. The file structure is focused on addressing the unique needs of serving video on the web.

Some of the benefits of WebM streaming are: users get to work on a simpler container format; high quality real-time video delivery; click and encode mode – minimal codec profiles, sub-options; and more.

According to Anevia (News - Alert), ViaMotion is a complete product range of modular triple screen (3Screens) video servers addressing the variety of configuration for fixed line, content providers or mobile operator’s networks. The servers’ main attribute consists in a high degree of mutualisation of streaming resources, a single point of delivery to end-user independently of the service type and0 the considered device.

The 3Screens technology allows for over the top (OTT) video streaming to multiple devices including the Apple (News - Alert) iPhone and iPad with the HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) protocol, PCs with Microsoft Silverlight Smooth Streaming, and Real Time Protocol (RTP) mobile streaming to Blackberry devices.

ViaMotion video server is already integrated with features to support streaming real-time live and on-demand MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 (H.264) video content, and now it is capable of supporting WebM live streaming to compatible web browsers including the beta release of Firefox 4, Opera 11, and the latest version of Google Chrome.

Anevia explained that the ViaMotion is the first solution that implements WebM live video streaming with adaptive bitrate managed by the server; this is especially important for telecom operators as it enables them to offer continuous video streaming over mobile networks using the latest Android (News - Alert)-based devices.
