2012 has already established itself as the year of mobile development. Louisville, Colorado-based company, Zayo Group (News - Alert), which has already seen remarkable growth in the first half of the year, has announced plans to make it an even bigger year for mobile than it has already been.

Zayo Group announced that they have formed a specific group to focus on small cell and Fiber To the Tower (FTT) technology. The group will report directly to the company president, Matt Erickson. This technology utilizes small antennas that can be attached to lampposts, buildings, or existing poles in order to better assist network reach for mobile network providers.

Zayo can be found in more than 50 metro markets and it is currently in the process of acquiring AboveNet, which place them in the major metropolitan markets of New York, Houston, and San Francisco. David Dunn, who has been an executive in the infrastructure field, has been named as the lead for the project.

Erickson says that the growth of mobile data demands creates a great opportunity for Zayo; "We are currently engaged in discussions with wireless carriers, tower companies, telecom providers, DAS companies, and wireless equipment manufacturers to provide dark fiber solutions to support national Small Cell deployments."

Zayo uses its FTT knowledge towards making the small cell deployment a success. Currently, there are more than 3,500 existing towers or towers under construction. This number is expected to increase as the mobile data demand is expected to rise more than 75 percent over the next five years.

They have already completed their fiber build in Nashville, Tennessee, and there are more plans in place for the future. They have already announced similar plans for Ashburn, Virginia, Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland, Ohio, New York, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Zayo’s big plans will result in remarkable advancements in the mobile world.
