Qualcomm Incorporated, a provider of 3G and next-generation mobile technologies, recently announced it has completed the acquisition of DesignArt (News - Alert) Networks, a company that deals in small cell modem and system design for cellular base stations and high-speed wireless backhaul infrastructure. The details of the acquisition are not disclosed.

As a result of the acquisition, DesignArt LTE (News - Alert) and backhaul solutions will now be a part of Qualcomm’s small cell base station technologies and complementary Wi-Fi, Ethernet and passive optical networking (PON) connectivity solutions, providing integrating benefit from the efficient integration of small cell and Wi-Fi technologies with various wireless and wireline backhaul options.

"DesignArt and its products will both enhance and accelerate our initiatives to drive increased capacity and coverage in mobile networks," said Craig Barratt, president of Qualcomm Atheros (News - Alert), in a statement. "Operators can significantly improve user experience across residential, enterprise and outdoor networks given the greater network efficiencies derived by implementing small cells and heterogeneous networks."

As per the officials from both the companies, DesignArt and its products will both enhance and accelerate Qualcomm's initiatives to drive increased capacity and coverage in mobile networks. DesignArt offers system-on-chip (SoC) and software products that enable the design of indoor and outdoor small cell base stations and remote radio heads.

Recently, DesignArt Networks (News - Alert) stated that two of its customers are in field trials and initial service deployments with single-chip LTE base station equipment - a clear lead in LTE small cell SoCs. With competing SoC-based LTE small cell products due for availability at least one year in the future, DesignArt Networks' DAN3400 SoC platform enables vendors to eclipse their competition with a substantial time-to-market advantage -ready to establish industry benchmarks in key LTE operator trials in 2012.
