A softswitch is a term that describes the concept of separating network hardware from network software. In traditional circuit switched networks, hardware and software are not independent. Circuit switched networks rely on dedicated facilities for inter-connection and are designed primarily for voice communications. The more efficient packet-based networks use Internet Protocol (IP) to efficiently route voice and data over diverse routes and shared facilities.
GENBAND (News - Alert), a developer of IP infrastructure and application solutions, is the top provider of softswitch technology globally, providing a powerful platform for IP communication services while continuing to meet subscriber demand for traditional voice services.
British Telecommunications (BT (News - Alert)) Southern Core, the regional operator of BT’s Latin America region, has selected GENBAND to migrate its first voice infrastructure throughout Argentina to a new all IP-enabled network.
“GENBAND’s experience within BT networks worldwide uniquely qualified them to tackle our migration needs here in Latin America as did their end-to-end portfolio,” said Juan Brina, sales director for BT Southern Cone, in a statement. “GENBAND’s proven carrier-grade products offer 99.999 percent reliability while providing BT customers with a highly scalable interconnection solution and IP peering features.”
The end-to-end network transformation solution includes the GENBAND S3 Session Border Controller, G9 Converged Gateway, C3 (News - Alert) Gateway Controller and G2 Compact Gateway and provides enhanced IP services for local, national and international traffic. Through an experienced professional services team and broad portfolio, GENBAND is replacing BT’s existing central legacy switch with multi-country, geo-redundant IP infrastructure and also expanding advanced capabilities to strategic sites that deliver services across Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.
Dan Lakey, GENBAND’s senior vice president of Americas Sales, said, “We are very pleased to expand our relationship with BT in Latin America. BT Southern Cone continues to smartly migrate and invest in state-of-the-art IP telecommunications infrastructure for Latin America.”
“GENBAND’s industry-leading network transformation solutions and services deliver the advanced IP innovation, functionality and applications that are in demand by customers in the region, while seamlessly migrating BT’s networks cost effectively,” added Lakey. “This marks the beginning of an exciting partnership between GENBAND and BT Southern Cone, and we look forward to supporting BT’s ongoing investments in network evolution in Argentina and across the continent.”
