As incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) enhance their broadband deployment, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) becomes a key element of their business strategy. REDCOM’s (News - Alert) next-generation softswitch solutions with extensive SIP-based VoIP capabilities, including SIP trunking, allow ILECs/CLECs to scale their network faster and more cost-effectively than with traditional trunks and phone lines, thus cutting operating costs.
Telecom Cook Islands (TCI), the largest provider of fixed phone, mobile and broadband services to the Cook Islands, recently completed a network transformation to next-generation network (NGN) based on REDCOM’s HDX and SLICE 2100 International/IP/end office softswitches.
With the network transformation, TCI enjoys a distributed, resilient network employing an IP/fiber backbone on the main island of Rarotonga driven by REDCOM’s HDX. The HDX, using REDCOM’s ClusterNet technology, allows the softswitch to be geographically distributed to two locations on Rarotonga, providing two points of call control, satellite access and business connectivity.
REDCOM’s HDX with TRANSip is an integrated softswitch and media gateway platform that delivers interoperable communications to service providers, ILECs/CLECs and private networks. Built on an industry-standard SIP-based architecture, HDX preserves all the functionality and investment in legacy assets, while offering safe passage to modern VoIP technology.
Thanks to the TRANSip architecture, four core elements (call control, media gateway, media gateway control and legacy support) are fully integrated, providing service providers with the flexibility and the benefits of a fully interoperable network while retaining valuable network assets. TRANSip, REDCOM’s IP telephony technology suite, offers a variety of next-generation network functions. TRANSip is available on the REDCOM High Density Exchange (HDX), SLICE 2100, SLICE IP and SLICE IP Micro platforms. The technology was recently granted a United States patent, No. 8,239,829 B2, entitled, “User Co-Routine Interface for customizing SIP and SDP protocols.”
“Other options required service agreements that triple the actual price of the softswitch in ten years,” said Jules Maher, CEO of Telecom Cook Islands, in a statement. “With REDCOM’s No Maintenance Agreement policy, there is no scheduled expense for service. And, since the REDCOM HDX draws so little power, it is expected to pay for itself in that same period. So, from the financial position, the REDCOM solution by far made the best sense. Going with the REDCOM platforms provided the greatest value.”
On outer islands, independent yet integrated REDCOM SLICE 2100s provide remote populations the same services and features as found on Rarotonga and technology-leading service areas worldwide.
REDCOM’s SLICE 2100 provides a high assurance migration solution that enables carriers to schedule a phased approach to VoIP implementation, risks and financial exposure. Built on an industry-standard SIP-based architecture, SLICE 2100 is a drop-in solution for carrier IP migration, end office replacement and distributed cloud voice services.
