on conference call costs, as well as provide a centralized management for remote users for some time now, but its not just big business taking advantage: school systems are also getting aboard the softswitch bus.
The Medford School District, a geographically diverse system of twenty schools in located in Oregon, is one such group discovering the wide range of benefits that come with migrating to the softswitch.
The district has been a long term customer of BestTel, the company that sells and services their Tadiran Telecom systems. And each of these schools had a Tadiran Coral PBX (News
) providing a comprehensive set of telephony features to the administration and staff, according to the company.
In 2007, Medford deployed its first Coral Sea Softswitch. The Coral Sea provides remote IP telephone support and is a key element in the goal of centralizing telephone system administration providing better response to each school.
Tadiran sells and supports a full line of telecommunications solutions through local and regional Business Partners. The Coral IPx IP communications solutions are designed to offer an easier and cost effective migration path to IP-based telecommunications. The Coral communications systems function as VoIP telephony servers and traditional switches, while combining feature-rich IP technology with traditional TDM telephony.
According to Tadiran, using standard PC architecture and Dell (News
) servers, the Coral Sea solution provides the school system continuity of operations or a fault tolerant plan. IN the beginning, the installed three Coral Sea servers, each providing services to users as well as a complete and real-time backup to the other servers.
Recently, ten schools were out-fitted with a Coral Sea Server using the exiting Coral PBX as the connectivity for telephones, and telephone lines. The company said with no single point of failure and multiple levels of redundancy these schools now have a realtime back up in place.
The Coral Sea standards-based architecture also allows the district to use SIP gateways by third party vendors.
Now, working with BesTel, Medford Schools is working migrate the rest of district to the Coral Sea using the existing Coral IPx systems as gateways. This is expected to satisfy their long-term goals while using the Tadiran equipment in place and saving substantial money.Tim Gray is a Web Editor for TMCnet, covering news in the IP communications, call center and customer relationship management industries.
