NEI, GE Intelligent Platforms Collaborate to Develop NEBS Certified Server for Security Gateway Applications

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Authorities with NEI (News - Alert), a global provider of lifecycle support services, application platforms and carrier-grade NEBS servers, announced earlier this morning that the company has partnered with GE Intelligent Platforms (News - Alert) to develop a new solution that performs deep packet inspection for security gateway applications.

The two industry leaders have merged their expertise by integrating GE OCTEON-based PCIe IP packet processor cards with the innovative N-2710 NEBS Level 3 certified rack mount server. The solution will allow customers to conduct deep packet inspection to isolate viruses, spam, non-compliance and a number of other interferences. The collaborative product can perform inspection for a myriad of different security gateway applications, including content inspection, network monitoring, data security encryption/decryption (SSL/IPSec/TLS), lawful interception and traffic management.

“Organizations that rely solely on stateful packet inspection are at far greater risk for application layer attacks than those that use deep packet inspection,” said Jeff Hudgins (News - Alert), vice president of marketing for NEI.

“Hardware-based solutions with packet processing, such as the N-2710, perform deep packet inspections at wire speed, eliminating the problems that many software-based packet monitors have in keeping up with line rates due to ever increasing networking speeds, and provide unparalleled network protection,” he added.

NEI’s N-2710 2U carrier grade server is a high-performance, power-efficient solution that is specifically designed to endure challenging environments, such as network data center, enterprise networks and telco centrals offices. The solution features up to 144GB DDR3 (Double Data Rate) -1333MHz Error Correcting Code (ECC) Registered Memory, providing superior performance-per-watt compared to other rack-mount servers. It also allows for up to eight 2.5” SAS (News - Alert) drives with RAID levels 0/1/5/6/10, which should boost reliability.

Due to the fact that the N-2710 is a pre-integrated solution that is certified for service provider networks, it will save customers time and money. VARs, ISVs, NEMs, and OEMs can install as many as four PCIe I/O cards in the N-2710 server, which gives companies the opportunity to offer more cost-efficient communication solutions.

The solution incorporates hot swap hard drives, redundant 870W DC power supplies, dual 2-port embedded Gigabit Ethernet NIC (News - Alert) with load balancing and failover. These features ensure high availability, enhanced performance and industry-leading reliability.
