Lanner Unveils New Telecom Platform Deployment Solution

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Lanner Electronics (News - Alert), a provider of telecom platform deployment solutions, recently released an innovative network appliance platform that combines control, management and data processing into a single appliance.

The new solution addresses the challenges facing the information security industry due to the increasingly sophisticated niche solutions for specific needs such as WAN optimization, e-mail security, application delivery and intrusion prevention systems. In addition, Lanner’s FX-7210 solution combines these different requirements into one single network appliance using two motherboards, company officials said.

The FX-7210 is the result of several years of development efforts and has already been used by two clients to deploy their new IPS and application delivery appliances. The FIPS- and NEBS- compliant IPS based on the FX-7210 is now used in the data centers of two Fortune 50 telecom companies.

Jesse Chiang, product planner at Lanner Electronics, said in a statement, “At these data centers, this appliance is handling 20 Gbps IPS throughput and 100+ Gbps firewall throughput, so this hardware was designed to inspect massive amounts of traffic.”

Thanks to the dual-motherboard system used in the FX-7210, it yields a high IPS throughput rate. The primary motherboard is a standard x86 board with sockets to support two Intel (News - Alert) Xeon C5500 or C5600 processors, as well as the Intel 5520 chipset. The secondary motherboard is customized to fit the requirements of the client. For the high-throughput requirements of IPS appliances, a RISC-based motherboard was used.

Designed specifically for the telecom industry, FX-7210 features several benefits found in ATCA systems, but comes with a lower price tag (News - Alert), the company said. An advanced I/O blade design makes it possible to configure up to 36 1GbE network ports or twelve 10GbE ports, in an array of SFP or copper combinations.

Furthermore, the motherboards are designed with trays to make field replacement quick and efficient, and the redundant power supplies help to minimize downtime.

FX-7210 is the first in the series of telecom platform deployment products expected from Lanner over the next months.

“As the leading provider of network appliance hardware, we need to spearhead the development of such unusual hardware platforms,” Chiang added. “If you need hardware that is custom designed to do IPS, SIEM, application delivery, WAN optimization, or other special appliance applications, keep an eye on our new FX series. This is just the beginning.”
