Telecom Platform Deployment Draws New Players to the Marketplace

Next year will mean more choices for businesses utilizing blade servers. Whereas Intel (News - Alert) has been the key market player until now, 2013 will mark the entrance of new competitors to the marketplace. Freescale Semiconductor is currently working on its own blade server product and will be unveiling its new telecom platform deployment soon.
Other companies are expected to follow suit, according to this Electronics Weekly report. ARM (News - Alert) has its own line of products that will also enter the market next year. The telecom platform deployment released by ARM is expected to build off the ARM v8 architecture, which boasts the ability to provide 64-bit data processing. The previous generation ARM v7 architecture only allowed a 32-bit instruction set.
With so many players offering similar products, each company is going to have to put its best foot forward if it wants to stay competitive. Rob Pettigrew, who works as marketing director for a division of Emerson Network Power (News - Alert), says that 2013 will bring big news in the way of blade server products.
Pettigrew also acknowledged that the transition will not be without its challenges for Freescale (News - Alert) – challenges that ARM will also have to face upon the presentation of its new blade server.
The Xeon E5-2600 processor offered by Intel is known for its performance, a stiff competitive advantage in this market. To date, market leader Emerson has largely used Intel processors in its Advanced Telecom Computer Architecture (ATCA) product line-up. In fact, its newest server, the ATCA-7370, uses the Xeon E5-2600.
This could present potential road blocks for competitors because, per 2011 figures, Emerson held nearly 20 percent of this market. And, in a market as lucrative as this, it’s no wonder that new competitors want a piece of the pie. The current market is growing at a rate of 12 percent a year and is rumored to soon be valued at over $830 million.
While Emerson is not committed solely to Intel, new players will have to offer something significant if they want market leaders to take notice. To prepare for future scalability requirements and keep up with market demands for high-density processing, Emerson decided earlier this year to use a series of Cavium processors for many of its ATCA products.
The deployment of these new telecom platforms means that customers will most likely realize a cost savings as no one player will have control of the market. And, those with market share will be forced to remain competitive so as not to lose business to new players entering the scene.
