Benefits of the Private Cloud in Telecom Platform Deployment

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

One of the leading reasons to tackle telecom platform deployment projects is to address the issue of applications running on different operating systems. However, the private cloud offers a reprieve from the issue as virtual machines hosted in the cloud allow multiple systems to operate on the same hardware.

According to this NEI (News - Alert) blog post, the private cloud and virtual machines take away the need for solutions dedicated specifically to co-existence issues. Telecom platform deployment works around this issue by allocating the necessary infrastructure to maintain system operations during peak usage hours. But virtual machines also address this issue as they can be added without an over-burdening cost for those times when the network is experiencing more traffic.

Telecom platform deployments utilizing virtual machines in the private cloud have an advantage over traditional systems in that a variety of applications can function perfectly on common hardware. The power to work with a completed ratio is much improved in a telecom platform deployment utilizing the private cloud and virtual machines. Companies trying to improve their Telecommunications Equipment Energy Efficiency Ratings will see a significant improvement in that area.

The private cloud environment carries a variety of advantages including a self-service component that allows administrators to choose usage and management of the private cloud without having to secure the permission of the provider. This gives telecoms the flexibility they need to effectively manage their processes while also providing quick and easy access to upgrades when needed. Meanwhile, resources and infrastructure are maintained by the private cloud provider.

Telecom platform deployment projects that utilize an architecture that includes AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) SBCs won’t need as many hardware nodes, which can save on costs, and also deliver increased redundancies when virtual machines are duplicated. Whenever hardware can be paired with other hardware, companies see better productivity and cost savings.

Further, virtual machines running in the private cloud allows for improved hardware utilization practice. The flexibility and scalability is virtually limitless as virtual machines can be added and dropped at a moment’s notice to accommodate for peak traffic.

Telecom platform deployment is definitely changing with the influx of virtual machines in the private cloud. Helping to shape that change are the technological advancements of the hardware that provides access to the private cloud environment. These advancements are driving companies to the private cloud as they undertake telecom platform deployment projects and seek the benefits of both.
