Telecom Platform Deployment Value Increases with DPI

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Communications performance is critical for any organization that hopes to stay on the profitable side of business. High performance deep packet inspection (DPI), however, often requires the use of specialized hardware referred to as Network Processing Units (NPUs). While NPUs demand extraordinary programming models and their processors are rarely upgraded, with the pace of technology and advancements in telecom platform deployment, standing still with complex procedures just won’t cut it.

According to this NEI (News - Alert) blog, the old and cumbersome way of doing things is no longer the acceptable standard. Today, OEMs have the ability to overcome any of the challenges presented by NPUs by leveraging an optimized Intel (News - Alert) Platform for Communications Infrastructure. Previously known as the Crystal Forest, this platform allows for deep packet inspection with a multi-core Intel architecture, incorporating new compression hardware acceleration and encryption algorithms.

Developers can leverage this new Intel platform to scale their solutions from low power, single-core, low cost designs with encryption capabilities of less than one Gbps and only two channels of DDR3 memory to the upper end of 16-core designs with eight channels of DDR3 memory and more than 80 Gbps of encryption capability. These enhancements ensure the independent software vendor can develop a solution only once and then scale according to the performance and pricing levels of the customer.

Members of the Intel Intelligent Systems Alliance provide products and services for OEMs and ISVs, delivering solutions that enhance the development of key products and help to reduce time to market with new innovations. Telecom deployment platform provider NEI is a member of the Intel Intelligent Systems Alliance, providing solutions that address the need for deep packet inspection as it continues to grow.

The key trend in the communications industry driving the need for deep packet inspection is the constant adoption of mobile devices being upgraded to 4G capabilities. At the same time, companies and individual users alike are increasingly adopting cloud storage and cloud computing while streaming a considerable amount of video. As this use pushes networks to the edge, operators are searching for the best ways to make efficient use of their limited resources. DPI allows them to measure the impact of the data on the network by inspecting each data packet in real-time.

This movement in the industry is affecting the standard operator to such a degree that DPI is expected to exceed $2 billion as an industry by 2016, according to a new Strategy Analytics study. At the same time, new players have entered the market such as Neuralitic Systems and Qosmos. Allot Communications (News - Alert), Procera Networks and Sandvine are standalone DPI solutions vendors and remain the main providers in this segment.

In the realm of telecom platform deployment, the use of DPI is becoming increasingly important as operators search for the proper methods to improve the user experience, reduce costs and ensure the service delivery customers expect in mobile networks. As this market continues to expand and customers base their loyalty on the user experience, the optimal approach to service delivery must be a top priority.
