Strong Alliances Provide Next Generation VDI-Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

By Amanda Ciccatelli, TMCnet Web Editor

Info-Tech Research Group today released a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Vendor Landscape report that ranked Citrix and VMware as VDI market Champions. Info-Tech Research Group Vendor Landscape reports assess vendors by the strength of their offering and strategy for the enterprise and recognize the vendors that are outstanding in the market.

Companies in the VDI space value the importance of expanding on business access and delivery methods, so they are creating strategic alliances to make it happen. For example, Cloud and Managed Services Providers, like Breakthrough Technology Group (BTG), which are partners with both Citrix and VMware, are able to leverage best of breed solutions to meet the needs of today's enterprise.

Listed as a Champion in the report, Citrix XenDesktop is recognized for its commitment to innovative market expansion through acquisitions. The company acquired Kaviza, RingCube (News - Alert), App-DNA and Sharefile in 2011. The report found that Citrix continues to stay ahead of the curve with functionality and a fast pace.

VMware View, the other Champion in the report, fills the gap between themselves and Citrix with several new releases. Although View requires third-party solutions for user-installed apps and XP to Windows 7 migration capability, it still works effectively for organizations that already have VMware licensed or need a simple VDI deployment in a smaller enterprise environment.

The lone innovator, Quest Software (News - Alert), leverages partnerships with vendors to create competition. Quest Software is a lower-cost alternative to Citrix that businesses with heterogeneous environments may be interested in.

A low-cost alternative to VMare, Red Hat (News - Alert) Enterprise is the latest ambitious member in the VDI market space. Info-Tech Research Group has listed it as an Emerging Player in the report with a promising future.

“While the year of the virtual desktop has not yet arrived as some media and analysts had predicted, the market has seen a steady increase of adoption over the last number of years.” said Laura Hansen-Kohls, Senior Research Analyst for Info-Tech Research Group, in a statement. “Desktop-as-a-Service is the next big thing in VDI. Vendors are forming strategic alliances, particularly with storage and cloud solutions, to position themselves well for this exciting new delivery model.”

Like the other companies in the report, BTG is a known provider in the VDI space and uses its alliance with Citrix and VMW to leverage the most effective solutions to meet the needs of today's enterprise through use of cutting-edge technology and telecommunications. BTG’s partnerships allow it to offer Turnkey solutions from the Server farm back through the end user.
