GlassHouse Simplifies VDI Deployment Performance Via New Stateless Reference Architecture

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

GlassHouse Technologies recently announced that it has developed a new Stateless Reference Architecture to ensure simplified VMware View deployments. The newly introduced reference architecture has been based on VMware View 5.1 featuring the advanced Atlantis ILIO Diskless Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) storage optimization software as well as the Unified Computing System (UCS) from Cisco (News - Alert). By simplifying VMware View deployments, customers will benefit from an enhanced user experience as they will be able to deploy storage-less virtual desktops by using only server CPU and RAM (News - Alert).

In a release, Jay Seaton, GlassHouse CMO, said that, "When we design VDI reference architectures, we work with our clients to balance the cost per desktop, improve the user experience and reduce the operational overhead to both maintain and scale the VDI infrastructure. In many cases, customers have to compromise on either the cost per desktop or the user experience when they deploy VDI. However, by implementing this reference architecture with VMware View 5 and Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI, they can lower the cost per desktop by eliminating storage. The I/O performance of using local memory results in a better-than-physical-user experience and that will scale using only servers and software."

Highlights of the Reference Architecture include – elimination of traditional storage requirements such as SAN/NAS, SSDs as virtual desktop images (VMware View linked-clones) are stored using local server memory; enhanced storage based on use of the Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI which offers 227 IOPS per desktop and effectively reduces memory per VMware View Linked Clone to 275MB; ability to support 120-140 virtual desktops per Cisco UCS blade server; better-than-PC performance with a Boot Time of 12 seconds per desktop while boot time for 120 desktops took only 2.5 minutes; the average response time of the VMware View planner was an impressive 0.53 seconds while the time for launch of applications was registered below one second; and improved operational efficiency  based on the VMware View’s ability to recompose in 45 seconds per desktop.

The Atlantis ILIO Diskless VDI software has been designed to support I/O traffic processing and inline de-duplication of images by running all desktops from local server memory as opposed to use of traditional storage.
