Industry Leaders Form Open Virtualization Alliance to Foster the Adoption of KVM

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

With an aim to foster the adoption of open virtualization technology, especially the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), seven key players from communication industry– BMC Software, Eucalyptus, HP, IBM, Intel, Red Hat (News - Alert) and SUSE – joined forces to create an industry consortium called, the Open Virtualization Alliance.

In the press release, the alliance spokesmen said that the Open Virtualization Alliance is designed to act as a great resource for the businesses seeking to understand and evaluate their virtualization options. The consortium complements the existing open source communities managing the development of the KVM hypervisor and associated management capabilities, which are rapidly driving technology innovations for customers virtualizing both Linux and Windows applications.

By citing the examples of customer successes, the consortium also plans to encourage interoperability and accelerate the expansion of the ecosystem of third party solutions around KVM. The entire initiative is aimed at providing businesses with improved choice, performance and price for virtualization.

The Open Virtualization Alliance members, who have a common interest in supporting the technology, will be involved in the development, distribution, support, use, or other business interest in KVM or offerings which use it. The clients will be able to select the ideal virtualization products for their business needs without compromising performance.

KVM virtualization is believed to smoothen the path from single system deployments to large-scale cloud computing. Leveraging Intel (News - Alert) technology, KVM , a core component in the Linux kernel provides a robust, efficient environment for hosting Linux and Windows virtual machines. By leveraging the innovations of Linux kernel KVM technology benefits from automatically benefiting from scheduler, memory management, power management, device driver and other features being produced by the thousands of developers in the Linux community.

“Organizations are looking to quickly and easily manage change across the enterprise while maintaining control over IT resources. Kernel-based Virtual Machines, supported by the Open Virtualization Alliance, offer organizations flexibility, choice and compatibility with HP Converged Infrastructure. They're a great open source option for clients,” Paul Miller, vice president of Solutions and Strategic Alliances, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking at HP, explained in a statement.

Earlier this month, advanced connectivity solutions provider ATEN (News - Alert) International unveiled what it claims to be the world’s first three dimensional (3D) KVMP switch. Offering USB and digital visual interface (DVI), the 2- and 4-port dual link KVMP switches, CS1782A and CS1784A, support the transmission of 3D video signals from various sources to an LCD monitor. Plus, for the flexible extension of peripherals, KVMP combines the features of an audible KVMP switch with an USB 2.0 hub, ATEN said in a media release.
