Virtualization Strategies Must Include Tablets: Carousel Industries Webinar

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Recently, Carousel Industries, a provider of virtualization solutions sponsored a webinar to discuss the topic of how to “Ride the IPad and Tablet Wave Without Drowning – Desktop Virtualization 101.” Presenters included Phil Magnuszewski from Carousel Industries and Todd Knapp of Envision Technology Advisers.

This webinar very closely coincides with the news that was recently reported by TMCnet that Pemberton Township Schools decided to upgrade its antiquated wireless infrastructure and called Carousel Industries to help them use the new Meru wireless/gateway controller system.

Pemberton is running "Blueprints for Success,” a program created to help children learn in the classroom environment. The program makes 2,500 computers in its district available to students for educational programs and is continuously updating the technology to keep its students ahead of the learning curve.

Magnuszewski said in the webinar that defining virtualization and cloud strategies is always the key first step to any strategy. A successful strategy, he said, includes addressing the critical success factors and considerations when implementing a virtual desktop product, exploring the benefits of a virtualized desktop offering and addressing concerns around tablet technologies.

And it’s a huge market – as Magnuszewski said, last year about 70 million tablets were sold worldwide. The iPad and other tablets are not fads, they’re here to stay. In fact, according to Michael Friedenberg, president and CEO of IDG Enterprises, 2011 will be “the year of the tablet.”

And people are using those tablets to access apps. According to Carousel’s numbers, there are approximately 1.3 million apps, and the majority of those are accessed via the Web, not on-premise setups.

In fact, TMCnet just had the news that Bytemobile (News - Alert), a vendor of mobile Internet products, found that according to wireless network tests conducted on Apple's iPad, on average, the iPad generated more than 2.5 times the volume of mobile data produced by the iPhone (News - Alert).

So it’s clear that you’ll probably need a tablet strategy soon if you don’t already have one, and watching this webinar is a great way to find all of the information needed to get started.
