Mobile VoIP to Soar Past $6B by 2015

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Voice-over-IP (VoIP), "the technology that has revolutionized voice services over the past several years and has brought calling costs down for residential and business customers alike," is spreading from the fixed-line world to the mobile world.

So say officials of research firm In-Stat (News - Alert) [www.in-stat.com], adding that usage is on the rise, "creating significant opportunity for mobile VoIP gateway equipment suppliers as expenditures in this space are expected to soar beyond the $6 billion mark in 2015."

Mobile VoIP "has only recently begun being implemented in the business environment,” says Amy Cravens, Market Analyst. ”One of the key benefits of mobile VoIP for enterprises is extending desk phone functionality to mobile devices. Business-oriented products will essentially enable the users’ cellphones to become an extension of their desk phones and will deliver, in addition to voice, a unified communications experience, including email, IM, and collaboration.”

Sounds great, doesn't it? Keep your fingers crossed.?

The InStat research also found that business mobile VoIP users will increase tenfold over the next five years, mobile operators are currently a barrier to adoption but could become a significant driver of adoption over the next several years, business mobile VoIP is based on IP PBX (News - Alert) and hosted PBX and growth in IP PBX mobile VoIP usage will largely be driven by mid-sized and enterprise businesses.

The recent In-Stat research report, "The Business of Mobile VoIP: IP Voice Communications in the Enterprise," explores the emerging market for business mobile VoIP offerings, covering the definition and discussion of business mobile VoIP, elements impeding and promoting the adoption of mobile VoIP in the enterprise, mobile VoIP products specific to the enterprise market and analysis of key providers, discussion of underlying markets including IP PBX, hosted PBX, and enterprise smartphone adoption, forecasts of worldwide business mobile VoIP users segmented by implementation type, as well as associated revenue opportunity and companies mentioned include: 3 Mobile, Cicero, Clearwire (News - Alert), CounterPath, Google, Nimbuzz, Rebtel, RingCentral, ShoreTel, Skype, Telefonica, Truphone, Verizon Wireless, Vonage, and Vopium.

Earlier this month TMC's (News - Alert) Mini Swamy wrote that a recent InStat analysis of the VoIP market shows a marked shift in the way it is being used, and that fixed-line VoIP is being slowly displaced by mobile VoIP.
