Nokia Siemens Networks’ (News - Alert) Wide Band Adaptive Multi-Rate (WB-AMR) functionality is enabling Smart Communications to offer high-definition (HD) voice services to its subscribers in Mega Manila, including the Bulacan and Rizal provinces.
Smart Communications is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT (News - Alert)) with 50.9 million subscribers on its GSM network as of end-June 2012. The company is able to deliver mobile voice quality through pilot implementations of this new feature.
Currently, only Smart Communications’ 3G network is leveraging Nokia Siemens Networks’ WB-AMR software feature but looking forward, the company will use this in its 2G network.
“Nokia Siemens Networks’ WB-AMR functionality lets us deliver significantly superior voice quality. This reaffirms our commitment to implementing innovative services aimed at providing the best communications experience to our customers in the Philippines,” said Rolando Peña, head of technology at PLDT, in a statement.
The upgrade from 2G to 3G will require only software updates for the network, and will deliver very high voice quality to the subscribers of Smart Communications that typically allow callers to distinguish commonly misunderstood sounds.
“This particular engagement with Smart Communications further strengthens Nokia Siemens Networks’ resolve to provide an innovative edge to its customers,” said Markku Nieminen, head of Smart Communications customer team at Nokia Siemens Networks.
Nokia Siemens Networks has also allowed Smart Communications to launch its Long Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) mobile broadband network. The company is also supplying its NetAct network management system to Smart for consolidated and effective monitoring, management and optimization of its network across all radio technologies.
