In a major effort to stop the use and sale of illegal repeaters, Globe Telecom (News - Alert), a Philippines based provider of mobile, fixed line, and broadband Internet services, filed a complaint with National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) noting that illegal repeaters are affecting call quality, according to ABS (News - Alert)-CBN News.
An illegal repeater is an antenna or wireless adapter, which is used to boost network coverage and signal, by hogging bandwidth from a provider’s network infrastructure. These devices are usually installed in hard-to-find places such as trees, windows and rooftops.
Globe Telecom says the use of illegal repeaters is responsible for dropped calls and dip in call quality experienced by its subscribers. The company has noticed a significant increase in interference cases caused due to illegal repeaters, in Metro Manila, especially Makati, over the last 3 months.
"Network and clean frequencies are important components for quality delivery of our services,” said Globe head for corporate and legal services Froilan M. Castelo, in a statement. “The use of illegal repeaters in order to get good network coverage at the expense of others has no place in this society. It’s a totally unfair practice especially as it impacts a great majority of subscribers in an identified area.”
"With our strengthened partnerships with the police, courts, and other government institutions like the NTC, Globe will remain relentless in going after and prosecuting perpetrators, both users and sellers, to ensure a stable, consistent, and reliable network for Globe subscribers nationwide," Castelo said.
Globe and the NTC have begun cracking down on sellers of illegal repeaters. This month, the NTC issued a show-cause order against an owner of an illegal repeater in Manila.
In a recent development Globe Telecom selected SPATIALinfo (News - Alert) as its supplier of a physical network asset management solution. Under this agreement, SPATIALinfo will deliver a geo-spatial Fiber Management (FMS) solution to improve the quality of Globe’s physical network data records.
