By Deepika Mala, TMCnet Contributor

Inmarsat (News - Alert), a provider of global mobile satellite communications services, recently selected Metaswitch for advanced VoIP products, which will help enhance its revolutionary new worldwide communication service, Global Xpress.

Metaswitch Networks is a premier provider of the software that powers a whole new generation of communications services and the solutions that fuel the rapid migration to all-IP architectures.

Some of the products to be used for Global Xpress voice services are Metaswitch Universal Media gateways, MetaSphere Multimedia Telephony Applications Server, the MetaView Network management System and Perimeta Session Border Controllers.

Based on Ka-band technology, the Inmarsat Global Xpress will be the first global superfast broadband network, which will provide seamless global coverage from a single operator, consistent higher performance and the network reliability for which Inmarsat is known.

Global Xpress, backed by Inmarsat reliability will also deliver unprecedented mobile broadband speeds of up to 50mbps for users in the government, maritime, enterprise, energy and aeronautical sectors. It will prove to be a guiding force for the next generation of communications and IT solutions.

Officials confirmed that the first satellite for Global Xpress is scheduled for launch in 2013 and will cover the Indian Ocean region.

Services will be delivered over a new generation of satellites, the Inmarsat-5s. Initially, Global Xpress services will be available through portable and maritime terminals. Later, in the first quarter of 2015, even the in-flight aircraft services are expected to become available.

Global Xpress markets include government users; naval, airborne and tactical military users; ministries of foreign affairs; emergency response agencies and aid agencies; the oil, gas, media, VSAT networks and telecommunications sectors.

In related TMC (News - Alert) news, Inmarsat plc recently appointed Miranda Mills as vice president, or VP, of Aerospace for Global Xpress.
