The New Hampshire Electric Cooperative (NHEC), a member-owned and controlled electric distributor serving approximately 83,000 members in 115 towns and cities across nine of the 10 counties in New Hampshire, has selected CalAmp (News - Alert) to supply with wireless communications hardware for its wide-area Smart Meter advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).
The NHEC Smart Meter AMI project will result in more accurate and timely meter readings, providing members more precise information about their energy usage.
"As a cooperative, NHEC is committed to bringing the most reliable and efficient service possible to our members, which has led us to the implementation of the Smart Meter system. The CalAmp wireless network solution will help ensure a secure and reliable flow of meter data across our communications systems infrastructure, enabling better control and conservation of energy resources for our constituents," said Seth Wheeler, communications administrator, NHEC, in a statement.
Mike Zachan, general manager of CalAmp's wireless networks business, said NHEC's Smart Grid requires a robust and redundant wireless data communications network that will stand up to extreme weather and operate reliably across rugged, mountainous terrain.
“We are delighted to support NHEC with the robust Viper solution to meet this mission-critical need and assure the secure delivery of Smart Meter data across their vast service area," said Zachan.
As part of the contract, CalAmp will supply a Viper SC system that will serve as the vital communications link between Elster's EnergyAxis AMI concentrators and NHEC's core communications infrastructure.
Earlier in November, CalAmp Corp. (News

The rugged LMU-4520 will enable worldwide monitoring and control of mobile assets in extreme climates and challenging operating conditions.
