Things Looking up for Embedded Mobile and M2M Device Industry

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

With all this economic bad news everywhere, it's good to hear some positive news. If you’re in the mobile connected M2M and embedded devices industry, that is.

And if you own a brewery. You’ll probably do well next year. And the year after that. And the year after that.

Juniper Research (News - Alert) has conducted a study that shows the Embedded Mobile & M2M Device industry’s revenues will rise to almost $19 billion globally by 2014, with “ consumer and commercial telematics and in vehicle applications accounting for over a third of the total.”

Other areas which will contribute significantly to M2M revenues include mobile connected buildings, driven by security needs, and utility metering, driven by regulatory initiatives in Europe and economic stimulus funds in the United States.

“ Despite the ongoing downturn in the automotive sector in developed markets, the most promising M2M area remains the automotive industry,”  said Anthony Cox (News - Alert), senior analyst at Juniper Research. “ We anticipate that by 2014 in developed markets over half of new vehicles will be sold with telematics devices using cellular connections.”

Recently TMC’s (News - Alert) Calvin Azuri reported that to enable mobile operators to foray into the Machine to Machine market, Comarch (News - Alert) has designed a platform that now has the necessary features for operators to provide services to M2M partners.

Other findings from the Embedded Mobile and M2M research include the observation that operators are starting to view the market for embedded devices and M2M as a market in its own right, rather than an add-on to existing activity, and that to effectively address the market for embedded devices and M2M, operators need to consider reappraising accounting practices and form alliances and partnerships with M2M specialists.

“ There is a growing trend for SIM cards to be integrated directly into devices, rather than provisioned at a later date in the aftermarket,”  the study’s authors find.

The M2M report analyzes the current state of play in the Embedded Mobile and M2M market and presents six year forecasts for key mobile M2M parameters and attributable service revenues, including the number of connected buildings, mobile connected utility meters, consumer vehicles and on-board M2M systems.
