ADTRAN WLAN Provides Reliable, Flexible Performance

By Steve Anderson, Contributing TMCnet Writer

Obtaining wireless communications capabilities is important for just about any office space. With users routinely carrying a variety of devices that can access a network without the need for wires, having that unwired connection point allows them to use these devices to the fullest, and in turn, helps advance the business as a whole. To that end, ADTRAN (News - Alert) has introduced a set of connection solutions around its new standard, vWLAN, dubbed the EN1615 Bluesocket vWLAN BR.

The Bluesocket 1800 and the Bluesocket (News - Alert) 1840 both offer an impressive connection solution for those users wanting to put more power in their wireless networking capability. The Bluesocket 1800 starts things off with a pair of 802.11 a/b/g/n dual band radios, as well as a second generation MIMO antenna built right in the unit. It also packs a Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing for two 40 Mbps streams to run at the same time, as well as 802.3af-compliant PoE support. Meanwhile, the Bluesocket 1840 offers up much the same as the 1800 does, but also throws in six R-SMA (News - Alert) connections to add external antennae, as well as the ability to function in 802.11 a/b/g mode and an optional 11n license upgrade capability.

This is a solid overall spec package, sure, but there's a lot more going on for the Bluesocket line than just its hardware specs. The Bluesocket line offers endpoint compliance, allowing IT staff to control and monitor traffic to encompass firewall functions, peer-to-peer applications usage, and anti-virus systems, among others. They offer high-quality connections for video and VoIP applications alike by offering what's called "fine-grained bandwidth" that allows for improved connection quality even with several users on the network at once. It also offers a high availability ratio thanks to the ability to failover to secondary software.

Even better, bringing in vWLAN itself has several benefits, like reduced costs thanks to the decreased need for both the initial CAPEX and the ongoing OPEX (News - Alert) involved with the controller, as well as better performance, improved flexibility, better reliability, and more.

It's hard not to be impressed by the Bluesocket line of vWLAN solutions from ADTRAN. They certainly have a lot to offer and in an easy to work with overall package. While they won't be for every business, it's certainly worth a closer investigation to see if the Bluesocket may be right for each particular business.

To find out more about ADTRAN visit the company at ITEXPO West 2012. To be held Oct. 2-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, TX, ITEXPO (News - Alert) is the world’s premiere communications and technology event. Visit ADTRAN in booth # 1313.
