Businesses of all sizes have already made the move to the cloud, while others are considering it as a way to revolutionize or transform their information infrastructure. The cloud allows a company to scale and streamline operations by giving access to high-end technology and hosted services online (hosted on third-party premises) without having to buy and maintain equipment in-house. Files and applications can be stored in the cloud on physical and/or virtual servers, and access to info is given to authorized users, as needed, whenever and wherever they are. Whether it be public, private or hybrid, having access to a cloud-based IT service platform makes sense for many companies, especially those with a distributed, on-the-go workforce.

Of course, cloud computing cannot be for everyone, and with many available options and configurations, how does a manager know which cloud model best fits his or her organization?

Recently, a growing number of companies have begun talking about hybrid clouds. Among those that have opted to use the hybrid model are federal government agencies that have come to understand its unique benefits where security requirements dictate. To start, a hybrid model allows agencies to use their existing infrastructure and share only some resources but not relinquishing data control. Therefore, they can maintain control over their data, for example, while still using shared resources to cut costs.

Recently, International Data Corp. predicted cloud service expenses for $1.7 billion by fiscal year 2014; by 2017, the company foresees the federal government spending nearly $9 billion on cloud computing. According to the statistics, federal IT agencies see the hybrid cloud approaching the best fit for their needs; the model comprises a combination of public and private cloud solutions, offering scalability and greater cost effectiveness while still ensuring privacy and data safety.

A recent post by GCN, a provider of information that identifies solutions that meet Public Sector IT challenges (like those pertaining to a cloud environment), tells how agencies are finding cloud adoption able to meet their business needs. For one, it is making application hosting – moving email to the cloud, for example – simple and more beneficial, when compared to the costs of owning software and equipment or of ‘leasing’ IT technologies. Ultimately, the “experience with hybrid clouds provides a strong roadmap for government agencies,” the post explained, given reasons for its continuously growing adoption.

The hybrid model can also serve as a transformational asset for company federal CIOs, as the post conveyed. It tells that “hybrid cloud is becoming the new normal for CIOs,” as hybrid systems allow them to maintain control over their data, for example, while still allowing them to have a flexible infrastructure to respond quickly to changing needs. “With a hybrid approach, CIOs can use the best resources for the task at hand, a way to connect data and applications to drive new value and respond faster to market changes,” the post explained.

According to IBM (News - Alert) Center for Applied Insights, nearly 75 percent of large enterprises will have hybrid clouds by 2015.What this means is that businesses will continue to take an interest in hybrid clouds and that more and more, thanks to the evolution of technology, will begin trusting cloud computing. For this, IBM sees hybrid cloud becoming the de facto standard, regardless of security or privacy concerns.
