Happy Saturday! This week in Cloud IT saw a variety of topics covered.  Whether you’re interested in the future of the cloud, saving money on software licenses, or “low coders” and shadow IT, there’s something for you. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at this week’s happenings.

The week started off with special guest contributor Jeff Denworth, SVP of Marketing at CTERA Networks, questioning what the cloud fabric of the future will look like. He starts off by asking what all major global organizations—GE, Capital One (News - Alert), Netflix, etc.—have in common. He comes to the conclusion that they all have “taken a pioneering approach to cloud strategy where all applications are or soon will be run and managed in the cloud.” From this observation, he notes that the “all-in” cloud concept is becoming increasingly popular, and wonders what the cloud will be like in the future. You can read about his insights HERE.

TMC’s Steve Anderson also discussed the future of the cloud this week by reporting on 451 Research’s (News - Alert) findings. According to 451 Research's “Voice of the Enterprise: Cloud Transformation,” businesses are expecting a lot more work to be routed through cloud-based systems. The reports note that, by that 2018 mark, businesses expect 60 percent of workloads to run through cloud-based systems. That’s quite the impressive jump, which indicates tremendous growth in the market. You can find the highlights from the report HERE.

In other news, special guest contributor Robert Duffner, Senior Director Product Marketing, Cloud, and a certified developer at ServiceNow (News - Alert), touched on the topic of “low coders” and how they can turn the tide in the war against Shadow IT. The rise of Shadow IT is the result of cloud computing, because users began adopting cloud applications without IT’s permission – or even knowledge.  Duffner writes, “Now, users are able to take advantage of cloud platforms that enable them to easily develop their own customized applications with little coding knowledge. Facilitating these so-called ‘low code’ developers presents an opportunity for IT to speed up software development and delivery timetables without sacrificing performance or security.” For more information on how enabling low coders can help in the fight against Shadow IT, check out this article.

To round out the week, TMC’s (News - Alert) Paula Bernier reported on how to save money on your software licenses. Using insights from the Flexera Software blog and Apropos, Bernier lists a number of ways you can save money on software licenses, and then ensure that they are actually being used properly. There seems to be a lot of inefficiency and wasted dollars when it comes to this topic, but your business doesn’t have to take part in that loss if you just follow these tips. You can read all about it HERE.

While some diverse topics have been highlighted here, that’s certainly not all that went on this week. Be sure to head to the Cloud IT homepage for all the updates, and come back next week for the latest insights. Have a great Labor Day weekend!
