Cloud IT Week in Review: Data Chaos, Cloud-Based Phone Systems and More

Happy Saturday! This week in Cloud IT saw a variety of topics covered.  Whether you’re interested in the hybrid vs. hosted premise debate, harnessing the power of data chaos or cloud-based phone systems, there’s something for you. With that in mind, let’s take a look back at this week’s happenings.

The week started off with some insight into the hosted vs. hybrid debate from TMC’s (News - Alert) Tracey E. Schelmetic. She argues that the average company needs to weigh cost considerations, how much control they want over IT resources, security, administration and a host of other factors before making decisions. She also points out that there is no “one size fits all” solution, and that the best decision will depend on what exactly your company is looking for. Meanwhile, special guest contributor Siddhartha Bhattacharya, VP of Global Marketing at Kodak (News - Alert) Alaris Information Management, discussed how to harness the power of data chaos. Depending on the industry, your company possesses between 1 million and 12 million gigabytes of information. By 2020 it’s estimated that unstructured data will total over nine times the volume of structured data, which poses a few problems. First of all, you’re managing more data from more sources and, secondly, most of that data is unstructured. This can lead to several more problems. To round out the week, Laura Stotler discussed how cloud-based phone systems can be used to fight downtime and thus foster business continuity. Downtime, whether it happens due to a power outage, hardware failure, theft, malicious activity or even an accident, causes a variety of problems that can impact any business. The cloud can be a key weapon when it comes to combating downtime and fostering business continuity, so moving phones and systems to the cloud is one of the best ways to fight it.
