Security is a problem everyone must deal with in the digital ecosystem. For organizations that are migrating to the cloud, addressing this particular problem can be difficult if the right service provider is not selected. The issue of cloud security was recently addressed in a study commissioned by Scalar Decisions and conducted by IDC (News - Alert) Canada. It revealed more than three quarters, or 77 percent, of Canadian organizations believe they're not addressing cloud security properly. That is a staggering percentage considering cloud is rapidly becoming instrumental in the overall IT model by organizations.

This was a thorough study conducted by IDC Canada and supported by Canada's leading technology solutions provider through a Web-based survey in August and September 2016. The respondents included 211 senior-level IT and business decision makers at Canadian headquartered organizations ranging in size from 50 to 500+ employees. An additional 144 screened decision makers that don't use cloud IT with on premises only deployments were also surveyed.

Some key data points from the survey revealed around 50 to almost 60 percent of organizations have yet to implement security solutions that are essential. This includes application-level controls (59 percent), client and end-point protection (57 percent), data classification and accountability (54 percent), and identity and access management (48 percent). When you take into account close to 60 percent of Canadian organizations have adopted cloud as an IT delivery model, those are a lot of systems with vulnerabilities that could be exploited.

Even if security measures are not deployed as they should be, 75 percent of respondents across all levels of expertise agreed security is the number one ongoing post-adoption issue to be addressed.

“Utilization and understanding of the cloud is low. Security remains the number one expressed concern across all levels of cloud experience, yet there is an evident disconnect between organizations' worries regarding cloud security and the actions being taken to mitigate the existing risks,” said Neil Bunn, Chief Technology Officer, Scalar Decisions.

This survey came at a time when Canadian organizations will be increasing the percentage of workloads hosted in the public cloud over the next 12 to 36 months. As to how much of an increase, they said cloud-based workloads will grow to 41 percent in 36 months, which corresponds to the increase in the percentage of their IT budgets allocated to the public cloud.

The lack of awareness may be because of unqualified personnel in the organizations. Forty five, 36 and 19 percent of cloud users classified themselves as novice, intermediate and experienced respectively in identifying the maturity level and description of their organizations' cloud strategy.

The numbers this survey revealed are sobering, to say the least. If organizations don't make security a priority, the damage they incur may be too great to overcome.
