Spacenet to Boost Business Continuity at Cumberland Farms

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Spacenet reportedly has signed a contract with Cumberland Farms to provide an upgraded data network to approximately 500 locations across the United States.

The new network is expected to offer improved business continuity with the help of common carrier and satellite technologies.

Companies such as Cumberland Farms now are looking to improve customer service by making them more technology-oriented. The companies need a reliable and efficient network infrastructure to achieve these goals. Serving the customers better is achieved with the increase in efficiency which in turn is achieved with a reliable technology infrastructure.

To support Cumberland Farms’ expanding retail applications, Spacenet is deploying a hybrid VSAT and DSL/Cable/EV-DO network. Also, to protect against network downtime, the company will use satellite networks combined with wireline services.

“We’re very excited to work with Cumberland Farms for their extended business relationship and their critical communications network,” said Spacenet President and COO Glenn Katz. “An increasing number of our customers are utilizing satellite and hybrid networks to provide a more simplified solution for supporting expanding business applications and network backup. We are confident that this solution is an ideal match for Cumberland Farms.”

Looking to provide faster speeds and advanced functionality to the Cumberland Farms, Spacenet is upgrading the company’s existing VSAT network to the SkyEdge VSAT platform. The network supports improved performance for web-based and back-office applications including credit/debit card authorization, POS polling, HR software and inventory tracking.

With the upgraded satellite and hybrid network, Cumberland Farms expects to have a simplified single platform solution, faster speeds for web-based applications, automatic and reliable network backup, and near 99.9 percent network availability.

Recently, Michael Waltrip Racing, as TMCnet reported, deployed Spacenet’s Connexstar Performance series, a portable satellite solution, to support its communications needs, which extends from the track to its engineering teams in Charlotte, North Carolina. The system was designed by Orbital Enterprises, an expert in both fixed and mobile satellite communications.
