AboveNet Picks JDSU's Fiber Inspection and Testing Solution

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

Network test and measurement solutions provider JDSU recently announced that its HP3-60 fiber inspection and power meter product line has been chosen by AboveNet, a provider of high-bandwidth connectivity solutions.

In a release, JDSU (News - Alert) officials said that the HP3-60 product line will now support AboveNet's future operations by providing consistent high-quality inspection and testing of the high bandwidth connectivity. With this, JDSU has standardized its HP3-60 with AboveNet.

According to JDSU officials, the HP3-60 is a low-cost solution for inspecting and testing fiber networks. The testing solution decreases total fiber inspection and test time by combining fiber inspection and optical power measurement in a single handheld unit. This will facilitate field technicians to work more productively.

The HP3-60 combines a probe and patch-cord microscope, which facilitates technicians to quickly inspect both male and female fiber end-faces of a fiber optic connection on a TFT LCD screen. Apart from fiber connection testing, the solution also includes an optical power meter that helps in measuring the power of an optical signal. This dual inspection eliminates the need to switch tips or use mating adapters, says company.

Chris Moore, director mid Atlantic operations, AboveNet, said that JDSU’s HP3-60 solution is a homerun for many fiber technicians. Having one meter do different functions will improve a technician’s efficiency as well as reduce testing time. It not only speeds-up installation process, but also speeds-up repair works of customers.

"By combining a power meter, probe, patch-cord viewer and display into one device, JDSU makes fiber inspection and testing fast and easy," said Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's communications test and measurement business segment, in the release. "JDSU leads the industry in promoting Inspect Before You Connect best practices when handling optical connectors and we are excited about partnering with AboveNet to help them achieve their standardization goal."

In addition, the HP3-60 also works in tandem with company’s T-BERD/MTS (News - Alert) 4000, 6000, and 8000 systems. The solution is also compatible with company’s library, which includes more than 200 tips and adapters for inspecting every connector in a network.

JDSU offers its communications test and measurement solutions and optical products for telecommunications service providers, cable operators, and network equipment manufacturers. The company offers its optical solutions for medical/environmental instrumentation, semiconductor processing, display, brand authentication, aerospace and defense, and decorative applications.

AboveNet is a provider of high-bandwidth connectivity solutions for business and carriers. It owns private optical network that delivers key network and IP services in U.S. metro markets and London. The company’s network is used in markets such as financial services, media, health care, retail and government.
