New Data Center by SMTP for Reliable Cloud Computing

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

SMTP is a provider of internet-based email delivery services for permission-based marketing and transactional email. It recently opened a new high-tech data center at the Hurricane Electric (News - Alert) facility in Fremont, California aiming to increase service reliability and performance of its cloud-based email delivery services.

In a release, Semyon Dukach, CEO of SMTP, stated that “The advent of email-based behavioral commerce systems continues to drive massive increases in the amount of email. Deliverability and service improvements are critical, and drove SMTP's decision to embark on our own state-of-the-art data center."

SMTP’s new data center has alternative direct routing over the XO Communications fiber network. It relies on CISCO and Dell (News - Alert) as the primary router and server vendors. This new data center aims to consolidate operations while deploying leading hardware and server infrastructure to provide greater service reliability and flexibility. In the current email delivery service market, new social networks, behavioral commerce systems, and other mission-critical applications depend on email for sending customer communications like sales order receipts, shipping acknowledgments, billing statements, and registration confirmations etc. For this, service level quality is a critical requirement.

SMTP decided to establish its own data centers for greater volumes, flexibility, and ease of management. Earlier, SMTP employed a server infrastructure strategy that relied upon contracting managed servers at many of the leading hosting providers. This strategy of distributing its server infrastructure over several hosting providers was designed to reduce service outage risk and improve availability of IP addresses, while enabling variety for deploying servers specific to customer service quality needs. But SMTP was not able to continue with this strategy due to significant growth in its customer base and higher service level demands.

Recently, ARIN (News - Alert) has directly allocated SMTP 4,096 portable IPv4 addresses to be deployed on servers located at the new data center, providing an ample supply of quality IP addresses for its customers in order to avoid service disruptions due to shortages of IPv4 addresses.

Semyon Dukach, CEO of SMTP, said that "We are committed to continually improving the quality and reliability of our services and are demonstrating that by making a series of investments that include establishing our own data centers where we can deploy and closely manage the reputation of our newly acquired IPv4 addresses."
