SunGard Availability Services Expands Data Centers in Atlanta

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

SunGard Availability Services, a company that provides disaster recovery services, managed IT services, information availability consulting services and business continuity management software in North America and Europe, is expanding its data centers in midtown Atlanta and Smyrna, Ga.

SunGard’s data center expansion will address the needs of Atlanta area technology companies that have higher power density requirements than non-tech firms. Moreover, the Atlanta area has a number of companies that need data center space in more than one center. SunGard addresses this requirement, as well since it provides a cost-effective, gigabit network connection for customers to link up operations across SunGard's three Atlanta area sites.

According to David Colesante, vice president and general manager for managed services at SunGard Availability Services, the upgrade of Atlanta facilities is proof of SunGard’s success in helping organizations ensure that their critical infrastructure is always on. Colesante noted that while SunGard provides small customers with cost-effective solutions that grow seamlessly, medium and enterprise customers are offered support to manage their applications more efficiently.

SunGard's colocation and managed services allow customers to run business systems and applications at a SunGard facility itself. The solutions provided by SunGard include hosting services, application services, email and collaboration services, network services, managed security services, storage services and replication services. A large-scale power upgrade is underway at the SunGard Midtown Atlanta facility to support an additional 350 cabinets of IT space for customers. The upgrade includes adding 2.5 megawatts in utility power, thereby doubling facility capacity. In addition, the infrastructure will be improved with an additional two megawatt generator, one megawatt in UPS power and 300 tons of cooling capacity.

For the Smyrna facility, SunGard will add 25,000 square feet of raised floor for colocation and managed services. The upgrade also involves adding six megawatts of utility power, 2 N utility power redundancy, UPS power with N+1 redundancy and 700 tons of cooling capacity. The Smyrna site will support SunGard recovery services, including SunGard AdvancedRecovery solutions. Moreover, the facility includes over 300 workforce continuity seats that are equipped with the technology, office resources, infrastructure and amenities that organizations need to provide staffers with an alternative workspace after an outage.
