Sagem-Interstar to Launch IP Fax Solution for the Cisco ISR

By Eve Sullivan, TMCnet Editor

Sagem-Interstar’s (News - Alert) XMediusFax is launching the world’s first IP fax software solution running on the Cisco (News - Alert) Application eXtension Platform (AXP) for the Cisco Integrated Services Router (ISR).

Sagem, the global leader in advanced fax solutions for IP networks, aims to better serve organizations in addressing fax as part of a comprehensive and cost-effective Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) strategy.

The XMediusFax solution is being announced this week at the Cisco Partner Summit in Honolulu, April 8-11, 2008 at the Hawaii Convention Center. The IP fax solution enables enterprise users to send and receive faxes from desktops, e-mail and Web applications, MFPs and mobile devices at anytime from anywhere. Sagem-Interstar also announced it has joined the Cisco Technology Developer Program as a Cisco AXP partner.

The XMediusFax solution is the first IP fax software platform to operate natively on the Cisco Application eXtension Platform (AXP), which resides within the Cisco ISR. It contributes significantly to streamlining costs, improving document communication, collaboration, and productivity, while providing more value to Cisco’s ISRs deployed worldwide in enterprises today.

The software solution offers benefits such as securing fax communication within the Cisco ISR environment; routing sensitive documents to designated recipients and devices for easier access anywhere, anytime; facilitating compliance requirements; facilitating a distributed redundant fax architecture with central Web management and eliminating the costs of traditional faxing. Other benefits include reducing the hardware footprint in the enterprise branch by eliminating the single-purpose server hardware, thereby decreasing energy consumption; lowering the total cost of ownership and creating easier deployment and administration with the software.

“We wanted a Unified Communications solution that would provide us with better document communication records and traceability, specifically for faxes,” said Luis Suarez, director of information technology at HIG Capital. “Bottom line, we wanted to integrate the fax capability into our overall branch communication strategy. One of the unique things about the SAGEM solution running on the Cisco AXP is that it allows us to embed IP fax capabilities directly into our branch router. This optimizes performance, and gives us several cost advantages.”

HIG Capital is a Sagem-Interstar customer that successfully adopted a trial installation of the IP fax solution on Cisco AXP last month. As a global private investment firm with over $4 billion of capital under management, HIG works in a very fast-paced global environment which handles legally binding, mission-critical documents for multi-million-dollar transactions.

The IP fax solution “provides us with access to fax documents anywhere, anytime, no matter where our people are in the world, allowing us to secure multi-million-dollar transactions, while maintaining an audit trail for our records management requirements. This is critical to our business,” Suarez says.

“Sagem-Interstar’s taking advantage of the Cisco AXP third-party hosting services on the Cisco Integrated Services Router (ISR) adds industry-leading Fax over IP to an already comprehensive Unified Communications solution,” said Dave Frampton, vice president of Cisco’s Access Routing Technology Group. “This complete solution delivers significant cost and performance benefits for mission-critical fax services in many industries, while facilitating highly secure communication, collaboration and regulatory compliance.”

The IP fax solution on Cisco AXP can be integrated into the Cisco Unified Communications Manager, and is available on a variety of hardware options and a broad range of Cisco ISRs. It’s also a solid fit for virtualization strategies since its boardless technology enables IT staff to efficiently combine and manage common resources for diverse applications, further enhancing IP Telephony and UC deployments.
