SingTel Makes the Logical Choice with BEA Systems

By Erik Linask, Group Editorial Director

Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), which operates in 20 countries with more than 150 million subscribers, boasts one of the largest mobile subscriber bases in Asia — the largest outside China, in fact.  It also is the single largest wireless operator in Singapore, with more than 2.1 million subscribers there alone, I including nearly 630,000 3G subscribers.

However, being a market leader comes with its challenges — namely, proactively addressing market demands for exciting new services and applications.  In a market that is as rapidly evolving as the communications space, that is not always easy.

“Rapid technological change, combined with increasing consumer demand for innovative and personalized services, has created significant opportunity for the telecommunications industry.  In this dynamic market, innovation, responsiveness and reliability are critical,” said Mike McHugh, vice president and general manager of BEA WebLogic Communications Platform, BEA Systems (News - Alert).

Fortunately, software developers like BEA Systems are in business to help providers meet their subscribers’ evolving needs. BEA Systems’ WebLogic Communications Platform provides operators a software infrastructure that enables them to more efficiently develop, deploy, and manage their IP-based communications services.

In order to fulfill its obligation to its customers, SingTel (News - Alert) has deployed BEA’s WebLogic Network Gatekeeper in its core service delivery platform (SDP). WebLogic Network Gatekeeper provides SingTel with a Web services and policy enforcement component, allowing it to quickly bring new and innovative scalable services to market without compromising availability or service quality. With the Network Gatekeeper in place, SingTel will now benefit from an enhanced service layer that will not only help it drive new services to market, but increase revenue generating opportunities in the process by leveraging the new software solution to effectively support content and services from its growing partner relationships.

SingTel’s SDP enables its third-party partners to access its network capabilities — including messaging, call control, charging, presence, location, and others — to easily integrate their next generation services with SingTel’s service packages. The SDP leverages open standards to ease management, delivery, and control of new revenue generating services, enabling SingTel to continue to grow both its customer base and its partnerships.

With the deployment of BEA WebLogic Network Gatekeeper, SingTel is growing its SDP into a next generation architecture by creating a seamless integration with content delivery, end user, and partner management portals.

“We are committed to providing our customers with convenient, valuable, and innovative services via wireless and Internet platforms and recognize that these services must be developed quickly and must function reliably in order to meet the needs of today’s consumer,” said Mr. Ho Siaw Hong, vice president of Consumer Mobile Engineering at SingTel.
