Open Source Software Company Novell Intros openSUSE 10.3 Linux Distribution

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Software company Novell (News - Alert) recently released openSUSE 10.3, the latest version of its open source Linux distribution. The software is available as a free download, or in a packaged retail edition.

In its announcement, Novell said openSUSE 10.3 comes with everything users need to get started with the Linux operating system. That includes a Linux-Windows dual-boot configuration, enhanced user interface, file compatibility for Microsoft (News - Alert) Office (thanks to the latest OpenOffice.org suite) and improved multimedia support.

Other updates with openSUSE 10.3 include the latest releases of GNOME (a desktop environment for computers running Unix-based systems) and KDE (another desktop environment) AppArmor for security (protects against attacks, viruses and malware), out-of-box MP3 support for Banshee and Amarok (default media players for the OS). Novell is also throwing in a package of open source applications for home networking, development, Web server administration and virtualization.

“The openSUSE community continues to deliver innovations and has created a new version of openSUSE that will excite a wide range of computer users,” said Andreas Jaeger, director of the openSUSE project, in a statement. “OpenSUSE 10.3 provides a stable and state-of-the-art operating system based on Linux kernel 2.6.22, and it contains a large variety of the latest open source applications for desktops, servers and application development.”

The free version of openSUSE is available at www.opensuse.org. The retail edition (suggested price, $59.95), which comes on an installable DVD for 32- and 64-bit architectures and a bonus disc of additional software, can be purchased at www.shopnevell.com and in selected retail stores.
