Ookla (News - Alert), a major player in the world in the field of Web-based network diagnostic applications, has announced the expansion of the Net Index to include ISP performance rankings. This latest data set will enable users in taking the next step towards broadband performance evaluation, digging past consumer broadband marketing and penetration, into definite ISP performance. ISP ratings will be provided by the new index feature, which will be based on end-user insight gleaned from over one million daily tests on Ookla’s extremely popular website Speedtest.net (News - Alert).
In a release, Mike Apgar the co-founder and managing partner of Ookla said, “The Net Index already offers a powerful research tool for academia, government, ISPs, and those curious about broadband performance. However, it has always been our goal to expand on that information and provide a resource that helps consumers make more informed broadband decisions. The new ISP ranking data takes a giant step in that direction; further empowering consumers for the first time with rich data that helps evaluate ISP performance close to home or throughout the world.”
Similar to all the data behind Net Index, the ISP rankings are also updated daily and will be available to the users for free. A user will simply need to select the suitable index; Download, Upload, or Quality and then drill into the applicable geographical region, city, etc., hence getting an instant access to ISP rankings. Additionally each ISP will also be listed with a 1 to 5 star rating system based on the input provided by the end-user. Consumers will be able to use this data for accessing their current or potential ISP, for identifying preferred ISPs in another city while preparing for a move, or for helping a family member.
Presently the new ISP rankings reveals that Comcast (News - Alert) is the top residential ISP in the U.S. based on the download speed performance, it is followed by Charter, Optimum Online, MidContinent Communications and Road Runner for the top five positions.
Ookla is the number one player in the world in the field of broadband speed testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. With its application development and licensing, almost every Internet Service Provider in the world is serviced by Ookla.
