It was a busy week in the Communications Solutions sector this week. Here are some of the major stories from TMCnet.

The American Safety Council (ASC) is offering online driver license tests to Florida teens through its FirstTimeDriver.com Web site. Teens now have the opportunity to complete their learner’s permit testing online.


In addition, homeowners can now use a computer or a cellphone to monitor and control their security system. They can also monitor the system on-the-go, according to Alarm.com.

In another story, leading companies are increasingly relying on disaster recovery technology to protect their enterprise applications, according to the Aberdeen (News - Alert) Group. The study, according to SIOS Technology Corp, confirms the value of high availability solutions in virtualized environments. Cluster software is the most popular choice for protecting mission critical application.

Also, a provider of semiconductors and electronic components to electronics and high-tech manufacturers, Smith & Associates, has achieved the status of CCAP-101 Certified for the Components Technology Institute, Inc. (CTI (News - Alert)) Counterfeit Components Avoidance Program. The CCAP-101 standards are used across the industry for authenticating electronic components.

And The 9-1-1 Industry Alliance (9IA), the public safety industry association advancing U.S. emergency communications and response infrastructure, has appointed a new board and executive leadership. 9IA will be led by Kim Robert Scovill (senior director, TeleCommunication Systems (News - Alert),) John Melcher (president, The Melcher Group), and Joel McCamley (senior vice president, L. R. Kimball). The 9-1-1 Industry Alliance has also announced its newest member, Direct Technology, a technology consulting firm, which will be represented to 9IA by Fred Michanie, president.
