Comverse (News - Alert) along with Tier-1 operators and handset vendors put forth and vouched for some visual voicemail industry specifications for factors such as how messages are configured and retrieved on mobile handsets.

These Comverse driven specifications have been adopted by the Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP (News - Alert)), the leading industry group for mobile communications. OMTP is a forum funded by companies from across the mobile phone value chain.

Visual Voicemail is part of the Comverse Voice HUB, a single platform for multiple voice-related services, such as next-generation voicemail, ring-back tones, and call completion.

Comverse officials stated that they have been pursuing for Visual Voicemail specifications because these would offer a universal consistency that will enable operators and handset vendors to provide visual voicemail to virtually all customers, which would help boost its penetration.

Tim Haysom, Chief Marketing Officer at OMTP commented that one of their organization’s ways to make life easier and better for consumers is by reducing fragmentation across mobile communications industry. Besides providing consistency and security across all mobile handsets, these Comverse driven recommendations will allow visual voicemail to fulfill its huge mass market potential.
