CopperEye Aids Deutsche Telekom Comply with EU DRD

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert) owned operator Slovak Telekom and its daughter company T-Mobile Slovensko have successfully implemented a joint IT project using the CopperEye and Sun Microsystems’s (News - Alert) Secure Data Retrieval Server (SDRS) solution.  The deployment has been made in a bid to comply with the European Data Retention Directive (EU DRD).

SDRS will help Slovak Telekom and T-Mobile (News - Alert) Slovensko to enable the secure retention and automatic management of up to 12 months historic communications data across their fixed and mobile telephony and Internet services.

Thanks to the SDRS solution, Slovak Telekom and T-Mobile Slovensko can retain and query communications data quickly and cost-effectively. This in turn will help them support Law Enforcement Agencies in Slovakia investigating criminal activities.

For this implementation, the companies specifically needed a single system that would retain Slovak Telekom’s fixed-line telephony and Internet data. They also wanted the system to provide a managed service to T-Mobile Slovensko for the retention of its mobile Internet data.

CopperEye was able to complete the implementation under a strict deadline and followed a compliance mandate, noted Slovak Telekom’s Director of Security Subunit Frantisek Gaulieder.

As they used the same system for both companies, they were able to simplify their working processes and reduced their operating costs.

“This is one of the first examples in our industry of a telecommunications operator using an integrated managed service to handle its data retention requirements,” said Carmen Carey, CopperEye’s CEO. “This is a great illustration of an operator successfully deploying an SDRS system internally and as part of a managed service model to achieve full EU DRD compliance.”

CopperEye provides enterprise data management solutions that eliminate the economic, technical and operational barriers to storing and accessing massive volumes of data. The company made a similar announcement this March when the Polish telecom operator Netia (News - Alert) implemented the CopperEye and Sun Secure Data Retrieval Server (SDRS) solution to comply with the European Data Retention Directive (EU DRD).

Netia deployed SDRS to enable the secure retention and automatic management of 24 months historic communications data.
