Aruba Networks and Motorola have reportedly announced that they have reached an agreement that settles all outstanding intellectual property disputes between the two companies.

 

Motorola (News - Alert) offers broadband communications infrastructure, enterprise mobility and public safety solutions to high-definition video and mobile devices, while Aruba Networks is a wireless LAN vendor.

 

The two-year-long disputes involved patents owned by both the companies, and the out-of-court settlement includes a cross-licensing agreement. According to news reports, Aruba Networks (News - Alert) said that it will pay Motorola $19.8 million to settle certain long-drawn patent disputes.

 

“We are pleased to have reached an amicable business resolution outside of the courts,” said Gene Delaney, president of enterprise mobility solutions business at Motorola, in a statement.

 

He said that the company is also actively exploring technical and business opportunities of mutual interest associated with the all-wireless enterprise.

 

The companies announced the agreement together with the subsidiaries Symbol Technologies (News - Alert), Wireless Valley Communications and AirDefense.

 

In August 2007, Motorola’s subsidiary companies Symbol Technologies and Wireless Valley Communications reportedly filed a lawsuit against Aruba alleging that the company had infringed patents related to wireless local area network communication technologies.

 

In September 2008, Aruba reportedly filed a countersuit against Motorola and its subsidiaries. In the countersuit, the company claimed infringement of two patents related to managing wireless computer networks and network security.

 

The patent lawsuit was costing Aruba big time, and the company had reportedly expressed concerns about rising expenses due to it. Industry analysts believe that the agreement will benefit Aruba.
