High Quality Silicon Carbide Substrates Demonstrated by Cree Inc

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

A major breakthrough has been achieved in the development and wide scale commercialization of silicon carbide also known as SiC technology. An announcement in this regard has been made by Cree (News - Alert) Inc. SiC is a high-performance semiconductor material. 100-mm diameter material is the current Cree standard for SiC substrates. Cree has demonstrated high quality, 150-mm SiC substrates with micropipe densities of less than 10/cm2. To support the breakthrough, this demonstration has been done by Cree.

A broad range of lighting, power and communication components are developed using SiC. These components also include light-emitting diodes or LEDs, power switching devices and RF power transistors for wireless communications. Cost reduction will be possible with the significant size advancement of single crystal SiC substrates to 150-mm. The throughput will also be increased due to this advancement. At the same time, the growth of the SiC industry has received a big boost.

In a release, Dr. Vijay Balakrishna, product line manager of Cree Materials said, “Cree’s achievement of 150-mm SiC substrates further demonstrates Cree’s leadership in SiC materials technology.”

According to the COO of Cree, Inc., Steve Kelley, the company expects that device cost will be reduced with 150-mm substrates. Manufacturing output will also see a boost due to the 150-mm substrates. Kelley added that the company hopes to expand their product range as well.

The LED lighting revolution is being led by Cree. LED lighting is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. The incandescent light bulb would therefore soon be obsolete. Lighting-class LEDs, LED lighting, and semiconductor solutions for wireless and power applications are innovated by Cree.

LED fixtures and bulbs, blue and green LED chips and high-brightness LEDs are some of the product families of Cree. The company’s product families also include power-switching devices and radio-frequency/wireless devices. Improvements in applications are being driven by solutions from Cree. These improvements include general illumination, backlighting, electronic signs and signals, variable-speed motors, and wireless communications.

Founded in 1987, the first blue LED was introduced by Cree in August 1989. In October 1991, the world’s first commercial SiC wafers were released by Cree. For further information on Cree, Inc. and its products, visit the company’s website at www.cree.com.
