Starent Networks, a provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services, today revealed that Motorola will be utilizing the company’s multimedia core networking solutions for use in its LTE (News - Alert) (Long Term Evolution)/SAE (System Architecture Evolution) network offerings.

“We are very pleased to be working with Motorola, as they are such a prominent player in the wireless market,” said Ashraf Dahod, CEO of Starent Networks (News - Alert). “We appreciate their recognition of our value, and feel that working together we can deliver exceptional mobile broadband networking technology with the superior support operators expect.”

Starent Networks is an innovator in high-performance, intelligent solutions for the mobile operators’ multimedia core network. The company’s products deliver exceptional performance in existing 3G networks, while positioning the mobile network for a migration to 4G/LTE.

“As operators strive for market share and revenue in the mobile market, they are focused on deploying high-bandwidth networks that can deliver the broadband-intensive multimedia applications that subscribers are expecting,” said Phil Marshall, senior research fellow, Yankee Group (News - Alert). “Solutions that allow the seamless migration of services from 3G to 4G are of critical value to operators and their consumer and enterprise customers.”

Andy Capener, vice president of marketing communications, Starent Networks, took some time with Technology Marketing Corporation to discuss the company’s new partnership with Motorola (News - Alert), the current financial crisis, and what he predicts for the future of mobile infrastructure solutions.

TMCnet: For anyone who is not familiar with Starent Networks, can you provide a brief overview of what the company offers, and who its customers are?

AC: Starent Networks is a leading provider of infrastructure mobile broadband solutions required by operators that enable multimedia services over the network.  The company is well known in the industry for its intelligent, high-performance solutions that act as the subscriber-management gateway between radio networks and the IP network, such as the Internet.  The solutions are access independent allowing them to serve a wide variety of mobile broadband radio technologies, such as, UMTS/HSPA, CDMA2000, WiFi, WiMAX (News - Alert) and Femto networks.  Over the past 8 years, the company has deployed its solutions in over 85 mobile operator networks in more than 35 countries.

TMCnet: There’s no doubt that these are troubling financial times for many people, and for many businesses. Taking a broad perspective, what are some things businesses can do to ride out this storm?

AC:  Technology has provided a great boost to productivity and the ability to get work done from a variety of locations.  This is especially true with mobile communications, which allows workers to stay connected anywhere, anytime.  With the deployment of mobile broadband, more and more people can have high-speed access to the information, entertainment and business applications they need or desire.  Businesses can take advantage of such technology to increase productivity and reduce expenditures, such as travel and physical overhead expenses.

TMCnet: More specifically, what is Starent doing to reassure its customers and help them get through these rough times?

AC:  The reality is that our customers are experiencing exceptional growth in the adoption of multimedia services over mobile broadband networks.  Many operators are now seeing upwards of 25 percent of their revenue are coming from data.  As a result, they are looking to improve the power, efficiency and intelligence in their network.  These are all attributes in which Starent's solutions excel.  So we are helping our customers by providing best of breed multimedia core networking solutions that help them meet their growing demand.

TMCnet: On a similar note, how can Starent’s infrastructure solutions help mobile operators meet the needs of their customers’ tight budgets?

AC: As discussed earlier, mobile operators are helping business customers stay connected anywhere, anytime, allowing them to be more efficient and effective. This increased productivity has a direct impact on the bottom line.

TMCnet: What are some of the creative, real-world ways Starent’s customers are using its solutions to get through the economic downturn?
AC: Mobile subscribers are able to access a wide range of applications that have traditionally been confined to a PC or laptop, including word processing, databases, presentations, and of course email.  This will make doing business easier and more cost effective.

TMCnet: How will your customers benefit from your latest news announcement that you are making on January 26?

AC: The incorporation of Starent Networks’ solutions into Motorola’s LTE portfolio allows Motorola to offer an end-to-end network solution for its operator customers.  The Starent Networks products fulfill the functional requirements defined in the SAE or Evolved Packet Core (EPC) standards. Additionally, the Starent Networks solutions are designed for a smooth migration to LTE for both CDMA 1X/DO-A and GSM/UMTS operators.  Mobile operators are looking for solutions that deliver on today’s requirements for 3G mobile broadband, while also positioning them for a migration to mobile ultra broadband networks.

We are very pleased to be working with Motorola, as they are such a prominent player in the wireless market.  We appreciate their recognition of our value, and feel that working together we can deliver exceptional mobile broadband networking technology with the superior support operators expect.

TMCnet: What are Starent’s expectations as a result of this news?

AC: We expect our relationship with Motorola will allow our solutions to be deployed in more mobile operator networks, and by working together that we will help provide a world-class LTE solution offering.  Here is what Motorola is saying about the relationship: “By teaming with Starent, Motorola is working with industry experts in the mobile operators’ multimedia core networks,” said Darren McQueen, vice president, Wireless Broadband Access Technologies, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility.  “Integrating Starent’s solutions into the Motorola LTE ecosystem enhances our world-class LTE network solution by adding a robust feature rich multimedia core to our overall LTE offering.”

TMCnet: Looking ahead toward brighter times, what predictions do you have about companies continuing to utilize the benefits of mobile infrastructure solutions?

AC:  We anticipate that mobile multimedia services are still in the earliest stages of being adopted.  More and more people will adopt mobile multimedia communications and utilize the ultra broadband networks being deployed.  We, as a society, will become more connected and have greater access to the information and entertainment we want and need.
