While power amplifiers are important components in wireless transmission systems, they are responsible for the majority of energy used in conventional macro base stations.
However, highly efficient power amplifiers are now available to replace the macro base stations with high power remote radio heads (RRH).
In light of this, Axis Network Technology said it has introduced a triple mode power amplifier module and IP linearization solution, for Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI (News - Alert)) compliant 64QAM systems at 2.1GHz.
The solution, which also operates with Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces such as Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX (News - Alert)) and Long Term Evolution (LTE), uses just a power amplifier module and IP block resident in the transmitter chain Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). No additional board space or components are required for their installation.
Officials say that the solution can offer 45 percent final stage efficiency for the 64QAM systems. These amplifiers allow the design of convection cooled RRHs capable of 2 x 25 watts of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) + RF downlink power at 2.1 GHz. The solution also supports up to 30MHz of signal bandwidth and single and multi-carrier signals for all modes.

AxisNT offers PowerDPD linearization solution as an embedded net list for use in either Altera or Xilinx (News - Alert) FPGAs, officials said. It combines a Crest Factor Reduction (CFR) block and Digital Pre-distortion (DPD) block to maximize the efficiency of the amplifier module whilst ensuring compliance to stringent ETSI and FCC (News - Alert) requirements.
AxisNT PowerDPD solutions offer several advantages. They reduce peak-to-average ratio (PAR) for single-carrier and multi-carrier signals. They also improve adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) without the need for separate chipset or DSP and they reduce cost for multi-channel MIMO systems, as processing block and feedback path are shared across up to 4 transmitters.
