No system lasts long in its current state. There are generally changes to the user interface, certain features are added—or in some cases removed—and improvements are rapidly made to ensure that users are getting the most out of a system and better fend off the competition. Recently, Thomson Reuters (News - Alert) made an update to its desktop program that would allow users to better enjoy communications functions thanks to its new Side by Side Integration application programming interface (API).

The Side by Side Integration system, coupled with the App Studio developer suite from Eikon, allows users to take advantage of a better overall workflow on a single desktop experience. That means greater efficiency, more effective communications, and other useful functions. Those interested in putting it in place need only refer to the Thomson (News - Alert) Reuters Developer Portal.

Reports note it was specifically designed as a way to address the needs of its primary user base—financial professionals—who are facing an ever-increasing number of options when it comes to communications tools in a desktop app. With so many providers targeting so many different substrata of market, Thomson Reuters (News - Alert) brought out the new modification to better ensure that the user's individual choice could be better accommodated in the desktop tool. Interoperability, better connectivity, and ultimately a better user experience come out of the modified version.

Thomson Reuters' managing director of customer proposition Debra Walton commented “Allowing the integration of Thomson Reuters news and data with other applications on a single open platform offers our customers a customized, time-saving, and seamless workflow solution. Leveraging our Eikon and Elektron platforms in the FinTech community gives us the ability to deliver quality solutions to financial markets. We are also delighted to be working with OpenFin as one of new FinTech partners in this effort.”

Systems are increasingly turning to APIs as a means to offer new value to customers and improvements in overall function. This seldom is a bad idea; though it's possible to bring out new features that don't have the impact some expect, or to bring out too many features that clutter a user interface and limit usability, most of the time, adding new capability to a system makes it better. With this tool, users should be better able to improve communication and functionality at the same time, allowing Thomson Reuters to better secure its position as the top of the heap in fintech.

Adding value helps ensure success not only for the user, but also for the system provider. Thomson Reuters is likely to find that much out here, and with this new level of functionality, so too will its users.

If you’d like to learn more about APIs, be sure to check out TMC (News - Alert) and Crossfire Media’s newest conference and expo, Communications 20/20, happening July 18-20 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The event will focus on the next wave of technology and innovations that will transcend the importance of person to person contact, disrupting the future of the entire communications industry. Find out more HERE.
