SiTime Corporation, specializing in MEMS-based silicon timing solutions, recently unveiled the SiT8004, a low power high frequency oscillator.

Company officials said that the SiT8004 is capable of reducing oscillator power consumption by up to 66 percent besides being suitable for high performance networking, video, computing and storage applications.

SiTime’s configurable solutions offer reliable performance and enable customers to consolidate their supply-chain, reduce cost of ownership and time to market. The company uses standard semiconductor processes and high volume plastic packaging and hence ensures easy availability and shorter lead times.

Piyush Sevalia, vice president of marketing for SiTime, stated that electronics manufacturers always strive to reduce energy usage. As quartz oscillator suppliers buy their oscillator dye from semiconductor providers they do not possess analog circuit expertise. This has deterred them from offering low power devices for high frequency applications.

“SiTime uniquely has both resonator and analog circuit expertise, enabling us to integrate and deliver compelling features to our customers. The SiT8004 is an excellent example of this expertise: not only does it reduce oscillator power consumption by up to 66 percent, but it is also a drop-in replacement for quartz oscillators, which allows system vendors to reduce energy usage with zero design effort,” Sevalia said.

According to company sources, the SiT8004 MEMS-based programmable oscillator features 6.7mA of typical current consumption at 125MHz. It can also support any frequency between 125 MHz and 150 MHz and is available in pre-configured options like 125 MHz and 125.00375 MHz for GPON, EPON and Gigabit Ethernet; 133 MHz and 133.33333 MHz for MEMORY (DDR) and PCI (News - Alert) and others.

The SiT8004 features the ability to configure the device to any custom frequency with 5 decimal places of accuracy, and receive samples within 1 week. It ensures optimum frequency stability, as low as ±20PPM that offers system stability required in cloud computing applications.

Also 100 percent drop-in replacement of quartz solutions in all four industry-standard surface-mount packages is possible. It assures 500 million hours in mean-time-between-failure (MTBF) that is critical to provide fail-safe systems in networking, communication and servers. The device features shock resistance of up to 50,000 G and vibration resistance of up to 70 G, added officials.

In September 2010 SiTime Corporation announced that achieved the ISO 9001:2008 certification for its Quality Management System. This accreditation re-emphasizes SiTime’s commitment to quality, constant improvement and customer satisfaction.
