Telconet, a well-known telecommunications service provider in Ecuador, recently picked Hughes (News - Alert) Network Systems for its HX System and broadband satellite terminals to run the Ministry of Telecommunication and Information Society (Mintel) rural connectivity project in Ecuador.
Tomislav Topic, president of Telconet, said they conducted a thorough evaluation of competing satellite broadband system providers, and were convinced that Hughes not only had the best technology for this program, but the depth of experience and the ability to deliver in a timely fashion.
“We are excited about this network connecting rural and underserved areas in Ecuador, bringing to these isolated communities, Internet access, data, voice and video applications for the first time," added Tomislav Topic.
Designed and optimized for carrier-grade IP broadband networking and specialized applications such as mobility and mesh networking, Hughes has introduced HX System as a broadband satellite system with an economical gateway earth station and high-performance remote terminals.
The core component of the HX System is the HX Gateway (News - Alert), which acts as the system master and includes the network management and dynamic bandwidth assignment manager.
The HX Gateway uses a DVB-S2 carrier with Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) for the outbound channel received by all HX System remote terminals. HX remote terminals utilize FDMA/TDMA channels to communicate back.
“Hughes has a great deal of experience in these types of government-sponsored initiatives, using satellite technology to connect rural and underserved areas, bringing the many benefits of broadband Internet access to help close the digital divide," said Nick Marzella, vice president and general manager of the CALA Region at Hughes.
Telconet has bought HX System hub and HX50 and HX200 terminals, and installation of the network has been completed.
