Mobile Backhaul Providers that Adhere to MEF Standards Ensure Scalability, Reduced Costs

A new strategic report from market intelligence firm Analysys (News - Alert) Mason, entitled "Assuring Mobile Backhaul Networks," states that growth in mobile data services has put pressure on mobile operators to reduce their backhaul costs, while dealing with trying to assure quality of service and keeping operational costs down.

As such, the report suggests that mobile operators need to consider many factors when assessing potential backhaul solutions providers, such as the cost of hardware, the potential integration of multivendor solutions, the service cycle required to maintain the backhaul network and end-to-end management.

In order to ensure that all these parameters are met, the report goes on to recommend that operators should select an operation support system solution that adheres to Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF (News - Alert)) standards.

“Some equipment vendors, in an effort to move products onto the market quickly, will implement proprietary management solutions for discovery and fault monitoring,” explained Patrick Kelly, lead author of the report and research director for Analysys Mason's Telecoms Software research stream. “This type of implementation actually prevents effective scaling and increases the operational cost for mobile operators.”

Vendors that support MEF standards – IEEE (News - Alert) 802.1ag, IEEE 802.3ah and ITU Y.1731 – will help operators to avoid scaling issues while keeping operational costs down. Furthermore, network equipment vendors should look to implement a quality-of-service measurement at network interconnect points, eliminating the need for network interface devices.

The most important factor for mobile operators when considering a backhaul solutions provider is the total cost of ownership of the IP/MPLS backhaul network and the opex for assuring service. According to the report, operators that have standardized their network equipment and management systems to scale effectively with growing networks have benefited the most in this area.

Recently, Analysys Mason's lead analyst for Infrastructure Solutions and Service Delivery Platforms, Glen Ragoonanan, authored a study which suggested that communications service providers can safeguard the success of complex transformations by simply being proactive and pragmatic.

Last year, the research firm named Telcordia, a communications software and services provider, the global market leader in Service Fulfillment for the sixth consecutive year.
