Brazil's ISP Teams up with Proxim

To deploy broadband service to 10 rural cities, a São Paulo-based Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP), RDL Comunicações, Ltd needed to find a solution with the perfect balance of high-performance and cost-effectiveness. After evaluating several options, RDL deployed Proxim's unlicensed WiMAX (News - Alert) and wireless backhaul technology to provide broadband service in 10 cities throughout Brazil. Recipient cities include Barueri, Carapicuiba, Caieiras, Cotia, Franco da Rocha, Jandira, Itapevi, Osasco, Santana do Parnaiba and São Paulo.

This end-to-end wireless broadband network has the capacity needed to support a large number of subscribers at a fraction of the cost of deploying fiber or copper cables. The network utilizes a combination of Proxim's Tsunami QuickBridge and new Tsunami QB-8150 radios for wireless backhaul and Proxim's Tsunami MP.11 unlicensed WiMAX radios to provide wireless access.

"When evaluating solutions, we knew that rolling out service to these distributed cities via fibre or copper would be completely cost prohibitive," said Ronaldo da Silva Nunes, Director at RDL Comunicações, Ltd.

Proxim provides better price and better performance than similar wired networks and is also a one stop shop for all RDL’s wireless needs, providing everything from wireless backhaul to wireless access. It would have cost RDL up to $6,500 per kilometer to deploy fiber. The Proxim Tsunami QB-8150 wireless backhaul links operate at up to 40 km hops. Estimated costs to connect via fiber would’ve come in at roughly $260,000.

RDL worked with Proxim distributor Seal Telecom to identify the best wireless solutions, which resulted in a substantial decreased front-end cost. RDL estimates a complete system ROI of less than 12 months after utilizing Proxim's wireless backhaul and unlicensed WiMAX solutions.

Mauricio Meirelles, Regional Technical Sales Manager in Brazil for Proxim Wireless (News - Alert), stated that Proxim is all about wireless. For a fraction of the cost, the company features a complete wireless broadband ecosystem, which gives them the ability to deploy broadband networks that perform similar to or better than wired networks. As a result, they have a great deal of experience displacing wired technologies and accelerating ROI for their customers' broadband networks.
