Latin American Nautilus (LANautilus), a part of Telecom Italia (News - Alert) Sparkle Group, has reportedly upgraded its submarine network with Coherent 40G optical networking solutions from Ciena Corporation (CIEN), the network specialist.

Based on its WaveLogic coherent receiver technology, Ciena’s optical networking solution will enable unobtrusive 40G/100G upgrades to existing submarine networks with only the addition of new terminal equipment. In addition to extending network’s capacity, it will help significantly extend the life of existing cable plants and further lengthen its lifespan.

LANautilus provides wholesale telecommunications services including managed bandwidth, Internet/IP transit and co-location services to carrier and enterprise customers across its 30,000 km fiber optic ring. Its submarine system integrates cable stations in South, Central and North America with Telecom Italia’s Sparkle Global Backbone.

Submarine networks are very prone to disruptions. With Ciena’s 6500 Packet Optical Platform equipped with coherent technology and intelligent software, the customers of LA Nautilus now have a comprehensive and cost-effective undersea solution for high-speed bandwidth service delivery over existing fiber optic cables, Ciena clarified in a statement.

The upgraded network will enable LANautilus to increase its total network capacity along the key route across Central, Caribbean and South America. The company is expected to be able to transmit four times more information per wavelength, allowing faster support to service provider and enterprise customers in the Caribbean, South and Central America.

“We are now able to offer our customers high-capacity bandwidth services to support the delivery of IP, managed bandwidth, HD video and cloud computing, among other applications, at speeds that scale to 40G. Further, Ciena’s intelligent software capabilities will allow us to combine competitive and effective service level agreements with our service offering,” CTO of Telecom Italia Sparkle (News - Alert) Group, Mario Pirro commented in a statement.

Recently Ciena Corporation announced that Spirit Communications, a leader in North and South Carolina business telecommunication services, will use Ciena technology, including the 5430 Packet-Optical Reconfigurable Switching System (RSS) and OneConnect Intelligent Control Plane software, to modernize and further enhance its transport network.
