Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert), specializing in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, launched the BCM5553x family of high density dual, quad and octal port single-chip 10G-EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLT).

These OLT devices are capable of providing high-speed connectivity and satisfying quality of service or QoS requirements of residential triple-play services like video-on-demand, HD-IPTV (News - Alert), voice over IP and high-speed Internet.

The new OLT system-on-chips (SoC) offer greater bandwidth. Along with the BCM88350 family of single-chip traffic manager/packet processors and the compact, low power BCM55030 optical network unit SoC, the BCM5553x, the new 10G EPON OLT will form a complete high-performance chipset platform.

Also the end-to-end solution is expected to help system OEMs serve telco and cable multiservice operator (MSO) markets optimally. They will ensure less time to market, besides low power consumption and cost per port, and carrier-grade QoS for next-generation FTTX access networks.

In case of fiber-to-the-building or FTTB multi-dwelling unit applications, the BCM5553x product family supports current 1G-EPON subscribers through 1G/10G co-existence. Also, new subscribers can upgrade to 10G-EPON for more bandwidth on the same fiber with a simple OLT line card upgrade.

Broadcom’s 10G OLT SoC for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployments will let digital homes  benefit from ultra-high-speed, latency-sensitive services such as 3D TV and advanced interactive Internet gaming.

“As content consumption by both consumers and businesses continues to drive traffic growth, providers must meet increasing demand for higher bandwidth to more subscribers,” said Greg Fischer, vice president and general manager, Broadcom.

“Broadcom’s BCM5553x family of 10G OLT SoC builds on the market’s most complete EPON and GPON product portfolio, enabling a new class of services previously unavailable via other forms of broadband and creating revenue-generating services for global telco and cable multi-service operators while reducing CapEx and OpEx,” Fischer added.

Other major features of the BCM5553x family include compliance with several products and simultaneous 10G symmetric and asymmetric operation with 1.25 Gbps/2.5 Gbps co-existence. It can support 512 subscribers per 10G port with up to four classes of service per subscriber.
