OFS Introduces New HomeRun Indoor MDU Cabling Solution

OFS (News - Alert) recently introduced the HomeRun Indoor MDU Cabling Solution at the 2012 FTTH Conference & Expo. The latest offering from OFS has been developed to essentially bring down installation steps and connections, while also ensuring faster and easier fiber deployment in multiple dwelling unit (MDU) buildings in a cost effective manner.

OFS are specialists in optical fiber, optical fiber cable, connectivity, FTTX and specialty photonics solutions. The OFS HomeRun Solution makes use of drop cabling along with low friction sheath which allows the unit to either pull six or 12 compact drop cables up a riser or to lower them down the hallway all in a single step as opposed to conventional solutions.

The HomeRun Solution starts with a seven or 10 mm diameter mini-cord breakout cable featuring six or 12 EZ-Bend fibers in 1.6 mm cords within a single low friction sheath. While one end of the cable is terminated via SC or LC Connectors which are plugged into the FOX Solution 144 FDH, 64 min-FDH, or Slimbox terminal, the other end can then be pulled up the riser and down the hallway moving past the living units. Ideal for deployment in moldings and or above suspended ceilings, the HomeRun Solution can also be used in garden style low rise MDUs. Newer versions of the solution will be ideal for installation on walls in a hallway directly.

The outer sheath can be easily removed at each of the living unit using a simple tooling and a 1.6 mm cord, or it can be terminated using an OFS mechanical or fusion splice mounted connector. The outer sheath can also be plugged into the OFS Slimbox interconnection module. Once this is accomplished, the living unit will be ready for accepting rapid and easy service connection via an EZ-Bend Invisilight 4.8 mm or 3.0 mm drop fiber at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) location.

The HomeRun solution comes with an OFS' ultra-bend-insensitive EZ-Bend Fiber which ensures less than 0.1 dB of added loss at 1550 nm for one turn at a five mm bend radius and has been designed to be fully compatible with the installed base of fibers.
