Cyan, a supplier of software-defined networks (SDNs) for service providers, data center operators and private networks, recently announced that its Blue Planet software-defined network (SDN) system and Z-Series packet-optical transport platform have been selected by Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC). The solutions will help PRTC remove cost and unnecessary complexity in its southeastern U.S. network. Moreover, PRTC will deploy CyNOC, a CyanPRO service offering that supplies complete network operations center (NOC (News - Alert)) outsourcing.
Blue Planet is built specifically for service provider networks. It lets service providers of all types to virtualize their networks, flatten legacy cost structures, make more efficient use of network assets and dramatically accelerate service delivery. Blue Planet is composed of three distinct elements: an open SDN platform, SDN apps and element adapter apps facilitating control over a wide range of third-party network devices.
Cyan's Z-Series platforms are widely recognized as the industry's first "purpose-built" packet-optical transport platforms. The Z-Series modularly support the aggregation and grooming of packet, SONET/SDH, OTN and wavelength services natively in individual, highly-integrated platforms. The beauty of the Cyan Z-Series is that any platform can be configured initially as a single-purpose, single-service platform and then evolved to support additional functionality as required.
"We were literally days away from making the decision to go with an MPLS-based solution from one of the big router vendors," said Tony Stout, CTO for PRTC, in a statement. "Fortunately, like many other wireless backhaul providers across the country, we discovered we could save money, improve performance, enhance reliability, and simplify our network by using Cyan's packet-optical 'router bypass' solution. Cyan's Blue Planet SDN software is what really made the difference, it dramatically simplifies our operations and allows us to easily create and deploy new services."
Cyan vice president of sales, Jeff Parow, said, "We view PRTC as extremely strategic and the type of provider we like to team with. PRTC prides itself on being an adopter of leading edge, carrier class technologies in order to better serve its customers and create differentiated service offerings. By deploying our Blue Planet and Z-Series solution, PRTC continues that tradition."
